Abstract

Modification of natural rubber into Maleated Natural Rubber (MNR) is one area ofresearch that is being developed. This research aims to study the effect of levels ofmaleic anhydride (MAH) and the mixing temperature of the grafting degree ofMAH on making MNR. MAH varied levels of 6, 8, and 10 phr (per hundredrubber) while the mixing temperature was varied at 135, 145 and 155oC.Modification process using internal mixer with 60 rpm for 10 minutes. The degreeof grafting was determined by titrimetric method where by MNR in xylene solutionwas titrated using a solution of MeOH until the solution changes color from brownto red to orange. Based on the test results of FT-IR for natural rubber, C-Hstretching characteristics inherent in the double bond C=C absorption peak is at 835cm-1 and stretching characteristics alkene (C=C) is at the absorption peak 1659 cm-1. And for the MNR, the absorption peak anhydride (C=O) were grafted on naturalrubber is at the absorption peak 1712 cm-1. And analysis of the degree of grafting, showed that the levels of MAH-graft can be left on the structure of natural rubberup to optimum condition. And the higher the temperature, the higher the degree ofmixing of grafting on making the MNR. Highest grafting degree obtained at 8 phrMAH levels and mixing temperature 155°C with the degree of grafting of 3.593%.
