Abstract

The peat soil is marginal, so that productivity is very low. The low productivity ofpeat soil caused by low fertility and high content of phenolic acids. The highcontent of phenolic acids cause toxicity in plant. Apllication of soil amendment isneeded to fix both problems thereby increasing production. Amelioran materialsused must contain the macro and micro nutrients, particularly CaO and micronutrients (Fe, Cu, Zn and Mn) should be high. Macro nutrient (CaO) can increasethe pH and cations Fe, Cu, Zn and Mn can suppress the solubility of phenolic acids. The residual material from the pulp and paper industry (dreg) containing a macroand micro nutrients, especially Ca and Fe is very high and produced in largequantities every day could potentially be use for peat soil amendment. The researchaims to study the uptake of N, P and K by root and shoot and the growth of riceplants on peat soil which is dreg applied. Peat soil material taken from Kerumutan,Riau on the depth 0-30 cm, with the weathering rate Saprik and dreg as waste frompulp and paper industry Riau. Experiments using Complete Randomized Design(CRD) with six treatments: 0, 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 tons dreg/ha (25, 50, 75, 100 and125 g dreg/pot), each treatment was repeated 3 times. Without ameliorant pH 3.7and Base saturation (BS) 10%, increasing to 4.2 to 6.2 and 20% to > 100% with theapplication amelioran dreg 5 – 25 tons/ha, and causes available P and K, N total isstill relaively high and C-organic tend to fall at the end of study. Amelioranapplication of 5 tons/ha increased plant height, number of tillers, root and shoot dr yweiht, total plant dry weight of about 10.9 cm, 174%, 382% and 340%respectively, and increase the uptake of N, P, and K by root at 222, 252 and 376%and 206, 276 and 369% by shoot respectively compared without ameliran dreg.Increased doses from 10 to 25 ton/ha did not significantly impact on theimprovement of each parameter.
