Abstract

Determination of four heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn) concentration in muscles andbones of edible croacker fish Sciaena russelli collected from Dumai coastal waters withtwo different anthropogenic activities has been carried out. Heavy metal concentrationswere 0.13, 0.21, 2.31, 6.38 and 0.29, 0.37, 5.05, 8.45 μg/g d.w in muscles and bones forCd, Cu, Pb and Zn, respectively. Fish collected from the station with more anthropogenicactivities accumulated more metals in both their muscles and bones than those from lessanthropogenic activities. Negative correlations between metal concentrations and the sizesof fish (length and weight) were observed. Concentrations of all metals in smaller sizes offishes were higher than those in larger sizes and all metals were found to be higher inbones. In general, the concentrations of analyzed metals were still below PTWI and thestandard limit for consumption of seafood established by FAO/WHO. Therefore, theconcentrations of heavy metals in croacker fish from Dumai coastal waters can beconsidered as safe and accordingly there is no risk for the human consumption of this fishspecies.
